Throughout my career as a photographer, I never entered any competitions. It was something that never motivated me to join in. I saw no benefit to it; I didn’t have the time. But before the school summer holiday, my wife and I joined my local photography club. It’s really nice to have something to do together.

If you’re interested in photography, I recommend joining your local photography club. They always need more support, and it really is a question of the more the merrier.

Like most photography clubs, they’ve competitions. At this club, there is a monthly competition (and many others), so I decided to start there and take part. I’m easing myself into it.

August’s subject was “me, things you like to do apart from photography”. You may enter two images, and these are my entries.

Reading and painting are two regular pastimes at home. The first image I had planned and pre-visualised, and it came out exactly how I wanted. The second was a case of taking the photograph and getting the exposure right. I always loved using window light. Both images were photographed with the Canon 5D and the Canon 50mm STM f1.8 lens.

September’s subject is “having fun on the beach”. Watch this space.
